As a trade organisation the CAB has to meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, each wanting to be able to manage the content on the site. Yet it needs central control, and the ability to ensure that design standards are kept high. However, as a trade organisation budget is a large constraint. These top drawer features needed to be provided at a lower drawer price.
Off-the-shelf content management systems have their limitations, but properly implemented can deliver a high quality, powerful website for a small investment. We have used several including Joomla, Drupal, Mamba and Wordpress. We find ourselves coming back to Wordpress again and again, not because it is the most powerful or flexible but because it delivers consistent results with a content management interface that is easy to use. As developers we're sometimes only involved for months whereas content managers use the site for years so the implementation should help them more than it helps us.
After initial meetings with the CAB we helped them identify the what they most needed in a site. We helped them look at budget, not only immediate costs for development but the most cost effective implementation over 3 years. We decided developing a custom Wordpress theme was the best solution. We then designed, wrote, developed and implemented the theme as well as wrote custom plugins for unique functionality. We were responsible for managing the project timeline, budget and helping CAB get agreement amongst all the stake holders.
